Thursday October 8th

7th & 8th Grade General Science: Today's science class was shortened due to an assembly. The deer biology project was due at the start of class. After turning this project in students worked in a small group to review a scenario that a wildlife biologist working for ADF&G might work through. Students considered how scientist might choose to measure/calculate populations of deer within a certain area. Tomorrow they will continue this activity by proposing possible study designs that might help scientists determine why a population is decreasing.
Homework: none

7th Grade Math: Today in math students completed a quiz over sections 2.1-2.3 (adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals). Following the quiz students then learned how to divide with decimals. Key concepts included becoming familiar with the terms: quotient, dividend, and divisor.
Homework: Review Homework #9 (due Friday)

8th Grade Math: In math 8th graders continued to learn about using the distributive property of multiplication and combining like terms in a variable expression. To help practice these concepts students completed a dice game "Rolling With Algebra".

Wednesday October 7th

7th & 8th Grade General Science: Today in science students continued work on their deer postcard project. Today was the final work day in class to finish up. We had students focus on the writing portion of the assignment so if any questions came up they could ask Mr. Olsen while in class.
Homework: Finish the postcard project, to be due on Thursday.

7th Grade Math: In math 7th grade students spent some time revisiting a few multiplying decimal problems as a class with some instruction from Mr. Olsen, before finishing up a worksheet for the students to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts of multiplying decimals. Students also did some review problems from the end of the chapter for review for the quiz on Thursday.
Homework: Review Homework #9 (due Friday). Quiz #2 will be on Thursday (section 2.1 through 2.3).

8th Grade Math: In math the 8th grade students started the day with going over a few problems from their homework #8 before handing it in to be graded. We also graded the worksheet from section 2.3 as a class, before doing some more practice problems regarding the distributive property for review before the quiz on Thursday.
Homework: Review Homework #9 (due Friday); finish section 2.3 worksheet for Wednesday and Quiz #2 (sections 2.1 through 2.3) will be on Thursday!

Monday October 5th

7th & 8th Grade General Science: Today in science students handed in their storyboards at the beginning of class. The postcard project was introduced next, and students were given the directions to create a letter, or postcard, or essay that summarizes the life cycle, biology and habitat needs of the sitka black tailed deer. Students were given class time to begin their rough drafts and projects will be due on Thursday.
Homework: Finish the postcard project, to be due on Thursday.

7th Grade Math: In math 7th grade students revisited addition and subtraction of decimals before being introduced to the next section on multiplying decimals. After some class room instruction and practice problems, students did a few practice problems on their own, before being released early to join in on the Shooting Star house disco party!
Homework: Review Homework #8 (due Wednesday).

8th Grade Math: In math the 8th grade students started the day with a problem of the day pop quiz. After finishing up the two question problem, the students were introduced to section 2.3, simplifying variable expressions. After some classroom instruction and practice problems, students were to do some practice problems on their own, before ending class 15 minutes early to make time for the Shooting Star house disco party!

Thursday October 1st

7th & 8th Grade General Science: Today in science students moved on in the overall scope of the Deer Study and began to learn about the biology of the Sitka Black-tailed Deer of Southeast Alaska. After some directions and discussion, students were broken into groups in order to tackle the days reading, with each student taking a section and taking notes to share with the rest of their group after a certain time period. This is called the Postcard Project and a due date is still to be determined.
Homework: Finish the storyboard, to be due on this coming Monday.

7th Grade Math: In math 7th grade students were handed back their chapter one test and we went over any questions the students had about the test as a class. Students were then introduced to adding and subtracting decimals, as well as a new concept called front-end estimation of decimals. After some classroom instruction, they were given a worksheet to finish the evens in class. If they did not finish in class, it is due Friday.
Homework: Review Homework #7 (due Friday).

8th Grade Math: In math the 8th grade students corrected their own homework from section 2.1 as a class, before the introduction of the distributive property. After some classroom instruction and discussion, the students were turned loose on worksheet for section 2.2.
