Tuesday October 30th

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students investigated at how different exercises have different calorie "burning" potential. Students then considered their own activities and estimated how many calories they burn each week due to exercise.
Homework: Finish calorie burning worksheet and exercise schedule.

Life Science:
Today in science the class was tested over the procedures that we will follow during Friday's field trip to Douglas Island.
Homework: Students need to bring boots (or old shoes that can get wet), a raincoat, rain pants, and winter hat to school by Thursdayso we can begin checking that everyone is prepared for our field trip. We strongly recommend that students come to school Friday with a bagged lunch, dry set of clothes and backpack to carry their materials. We will be leaving DHMS at 10:00 on Friday and will be returning around 2:30 in the afternoon.

Monday October 29th

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students continued working on calculating their individual daily nutrition needs and comparing these values to their actual intake.
Homework: none

Life Science:
Today in science the class practiced the procedures that we will use in the deer study field trip this week. ***IMPORTANT!!! Due to the 40 mph winds and heavy rain forcasted for Tuesday (tomorrow) we have decided to reschedule the field trip to this Friday. Students will leave school around 10:00 after their exploratory classes. We will return to Dzantik'i Heeni between 2:30 and 2:45. Students will need to bring boots, rain coats, hats and gloves by Thursday of this week.

Homework:

Today in math students continued working on their health/diet graphing project.
Homework: none

Life Science:
Today in science the class reviewed the procedures that we will use in the deer study field trip next week. The Deer Study field trip to Douglas Island is scheduled for Tuesday of next week. Students will need to bring boots, rain coats, hats and gloves by Monday of next week.

Homework:

Tuesday October 23rd

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students began a new mini unit on graphing. Chapter 2 make up test is scheduled for tomorrow.
Homework: Study for the Chapter 2 make up test.

Life Science:
Today in science the class reviewed deer habitat requirements and the yearly life cycle of Sitka Black Tailed Deer. We then introduced students to the four primary winter browse plant species that deer rely upon in their winter habitat of old growth forests [Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), Foam Flower (Tiarella trifoliata), Fern Leaf Goldenthread (Coptis asplenifolia), and Trailing Raspberry (Rubus pedatus)]. The class also went out into the forests around DHMS to observe the differences between light, overstory canopy, and understory plant life between old growth and even-aged second growth forests. The Deer Study field trip to Douglas Island is scheduled for Tuesday of next week. Students will need to bring boots, rain coats, hats and gloves by Monday of next week.

Monday October 22nd

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students received their corrected tests from Chapter Two. Due to the very low class average score we will spend a few more days reviewing material and giving extra assistance to students not understanding key concepts.
Homework: Complete Chapter Two test corrections using the Corrections study guide that we completed and went over in class.

Life Science:
Today in science Matt Kirchoff, of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, gave a guest presentation regarding how scientists use the scientific method to answer questions. Students also turned in their Deer Projects which were due today.

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students completed a test over chapter 2. This grade will be the final content grade of 1st quarter.
Homework: Finish any make up work from Chapter 2.

Life Science:
Today in science the class continued working on their Deer Biology Project. Final drafts will be due Monday at the start of class.
Homework: Finish deer biology project (due Monday).

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math the class went over the answers and results of the diagnostic test from the review packet. Students then used the rest of the class period to study for the test on Monday. Chapter 2 test is scheduled for Monday.
Homework: Finish Review Packet which was handed out yesterday. The entire packet is due Monday at the start of class.

Life Science:
Today in science the class was introduced to a short project which will give students the opportunity to learn the ecology of deer in Southeast Alaska.
Homework: Finish note taking guide on Deer Biology Project.

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math the class received a review packet and worked on the standardized test page to use as a diagnostic tool for what topics they need to study. Chapter 2 test is scheduled for Monday.
Homework: Finish Standardized Test in the Review Packet handed out today. The entire packet is due Monday at the start of class.

Life Science:
In science students watched a video on wildlife management here in Alaska.

Today in math students Learned how to solve algebraic equations involving multiplication and division.
Homework: Section 2.6 Practice #2-18 evens on page 27-28 of Practice Workbook (due Friday)

In science students learned about resource management and practiced how professionals balance costs and benefits to make decisions.

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students learned how to solve algebraic problems involving adding and subtracting integers.
Homework: Section 2.5 Practice #1-27 odd on page 25-26 of Practice Workbook (due Wednesday)

Life Science:
In science students checked their updated grades which were posted on the door. We then we graphed data that was collected during yesterday's activity. Students in my homeroom also received parent teacher conference forms. These need to be signed and returned by Thursday of this week.

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students completed mid chapter quiz over sections 2.1 - 2.3. We then went over Algebraic equations and how to translate a mathematical equation into a word sentence.
Homework: Section 2.4 Practice #2-26 evens (on page 23-24 of Practice Workbook)

Life Science:
In science students participated in a game that illustrated the relationships between habitat resources, populations, and carrying capacity.

Core 3 Mathematics:
Today in math students reviewed distributive property of multiplication. The class was then introduced to simplifying variable expressions by combining "like terms". All make up work for Chapter one must be turned in by tomorrow (Friday).

In science students finished their habitat cards and then played "habitat rummy". The other class watched a video on ecological concepts.
