Life Science:
Today in science the class reviewed deer habitat requirements and the yearly life cycle of Sitka Black Tailed Deer. We then introduced students to the four primary winter browse plant species that deer rely upon in their winter habitat of old growth forests [Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), Foam Flower (Tiarella trifoliata), Fern Leaf Goldenthread (Coptis asplenifolia), and Trailing Raspberry (Rubus pedatus)]. The class also went out into the forests around DHMS to observe the differences between light, overstory canopy, and understory plant life between old growth and even-aged second growth forests. The Deer Study field trip to Douglas Island is scheduled for Tuesday of next week. Students will need to bring boots, rain coats, hats and gloves by Monday of next week.
Homework: none
